This picture speaks of three beautiful mermaids goddesses who lived off the island Pitcairn: Tefnut - goddess of water and Egyptian fertility, Mazu,- Chinese goddess of water and protector of sea people, Doride - Greek goddess of sea generosity.
The three goddesses, tired of the pollution and brutality of the places they inhabited, made a covenant with the God of the sea that allowed them to live in this enchanted place and out of time in the form of mermaids, as long as they never joined the humans. The girls spent peaceful lives, swimming and chatting among themselves. One day, an event shook their quiet lives: the arrival of a large English ship with sailors on board. The sailors landed on the island and, during the exploration of the surrounding seas, could not avoid to contemplate these beautiful creatures. The mermaids, intrigued, reported to foreigners, while observing the strict rule of the sea that did not allow them to mate with humans. Tefnut, Mazu and Doride, spent happy days in company of the young men, and when they left the island, they greeted them reluctantly, hoping to see them again a day not too far away.
All three returned to their rocks, to their daily life, quiet and without surprises. But three days after sailors left, Doride received a visit from one of them who had fallen in love with her. In the sight of Mazu, sitting on the nearby rock, she rejected the advances of the lover, keeping her commitment. Mazu was shaken, thought that if it happened to her, she would run away and live the passion with the sailor and that made her tell the story to Tefnut.
The day after the God of the sea, accompanied by Tefnut, asked Mazu to join them by the Doride rock. The God accused Doride of having laid with the sailor, asking Mazu to confirm or deny what happened. The young Mazu, blinded by envy, confirmed the lie, and remained helpless to witness the sentencing of Doride who was deprived of her mermaid tail and thrown into the bottom of the sea. As the days passed, the guilt grew in the breast of Mazu; every time she dived into the sea, heavy shells anchored to her tail, attracted like magnets by the enormous weight that tore the Mazu heart and making it difficult even to swim. One day Mazu dived and could no longer climb, waving her arms and fins swirling but, despite this, ended up inexorably at the bottom of the sea.
It was dark down there.
It was cold down there.
She was alone down there.
She screamed, tried for weeks to talk to someone and ask for help.
In a day of great sun, a thread of light illuminated the darkness that enveloped the bottom of the sea. Mazu saw a figure lying at the bottom. She did to scream and call for help but the cry died in her throat.
The body that Mazu saw was that of Doride
